This was an important match as the team had failed to secure their position in the tournament during the other matches that were played recently. It was a good opportunity as Italy, at its 16th place, ranks lower than India which is stationed at 13 in the league. The tournament offers three Olympic spots, hence a lot is at stake here.
This win permits India to move forward into the play-off for the fifth and sixth spot which is scheduled for July 4th where they will face either Belgium or Japan. A win in this league would have Indian Women’s hockey team as an entrant in the Olympics. The last time this happened, was in 1980.
It was a very close chase and India almost tied with Italy, but they emerged out as winners in the end. Let us hope the wins continue.
